Paul starts this section on overcoming worry with a simple verse containing a simple command repeated two times:

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.

Joy is a choice that we make and it’s based on the perspective that we take.  Joy is not a byproduct of good circumstances, it’s a choice we make regardless of our circumstances because of a perspective we choose to keep in all things.  Jesus chose joy even in the face of the cross:

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God — Hebrews 12:2

My wife and I are literally in a trial trying to adopt our foster child of 14 months. The trial is filled with delays and extensions. We know that this testing of our Faith making us complete… So in that we try to Praise Him.

James 1 ” Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
